Dear CMCC families,
The fourth Sunday of Easter
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
I am the good shepherd, says the Lord;
I know my sheep, and mine know me.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
We welcomed the news of our new Pope Leo XIV this morning. This is clearly big news for the Catholic Church and Catholic communities like CMCC all around the world. We pray that he will be inspired to lead with humility, grace and wisdom and be a light to our community and all like it across the globe. God bless Pope Leo XIV !
Year 12 Reports will be distributed to families today and reflect the work done by Year 12 in each of their subjects, with their teachers, educators and peers.
It’s important that Year 12 reflect on these reports and results with their families, to gauge where to next in terms of priorities, emphasis and effort. I know that all our students are striving for their personal best and their teachers are here to support and guide them, but only they can do the work if they are to achieve everything, they are capable of achieving.
Happy Mother’s Day to all Mothers, Grandmothers, Carers, Aunts and mother figures for this coming Sunday. I trust that all who care for our young people will be duly recognised and celebrated and that their love and support for those they care for is appreciated. We look forward to welcoming many in our community to our Mother’s Day Breakfast next Friday 16th May in the College Hall. This date was set to be close to Mother’s Day but to avoid clashes with primary school events and our own Year 7 Camp.
Building at CMCC
As indicated in a Compass post earlier this week, we are pleased to inform the community that the final construction phase will commence on Catherine McAuley Catholic College on 9th May.
This is the fifth and final stage of construction and consists of;
Block I, a two-story building that incorporates 13 interconnecting general-purpose learning areas, an outdoor breakout space, central foyer space, a lift, and male and female accessible amenities. And
Block J a two-story building that incorporates 12 interconnecting general-purpose learning areas, an outdoor breakout space, a gym and central foyer space.
We anticipate these facilities will be completed for Term 1 2026, but as always construction timelines are dependent on a variety of external factors including the weather.
We will continue to share relevant updates regarding progress of our CMCC Secondary College facilities and construction project.
Minor adjustment to Years 7 – 10 boys winter uniform.
After careful consideration and consultation with the Wellbeing Team, it has been determined that wearing the College tie for boys in Years 7 – 10 each day during the winter uniform period, (Mother’s Day to Father’s Day) will not be compulsory. The College tie remains an important part of the uniform and will be required to be worn on occasions such as special liturgies, photo day, some formal assemblies and significant College occasions.
It is important to note that there are no other changes to the College uniform including but not limited to restrictions regarding accessories, facial piercings and facial hair. The College tie remains a compulsory item for senior students.
We welcome the new term together and as is always the case, encourage all families to be in contact with the College regarding any matters of concern, things to be celebrated and anything that supports us as an ever growing and evolving Catholic College community.

A Message from the Assistant Principal
Claudette Stace
Welcome back to Term 2. We have an exciting term ahead with so many wonderful opportunities for our McAuley Eagles both in and out of the classroom. I encourage all students to get involved, be active and curious learners in the classroom and active participants in the life of the college.
Attendance Matters
School attendance plays a critical role in enhancing the lives of students in schools. Every day of attendance adds to a student’s academic and social achievements at school, and conversely every absence, can impact their learning and progress.
To encourage our students to increase their attendance rate we are introducing a prize for 100% attendance that will be on offer each term. At the end of term House celebrations students in each year group will go into the draw with their peers to receive a JB Hi-Fi gift voucher to the value of $50.
You’ve got to be in it to win it!

A Message from the Leader of Ministry

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16
Welcome to Term 2 at Catherine McAuley Catholic College! We begin this term with renewed energy and purpose, inspired by the hope and light that our faith brings to our daily lives.
Our Year 11 students recently participated in their Reflection Day which marks a significant milestone in their senior journey here at Catherine McAuley. This day offered time away from the usual routines, providing space to reflect, reconnect, and consider how they can be shining lamps in our CMCC community.

The theme of the day centred on four key messages:
- God’s Word as Light – Students explored how Scripture can guide them through life’s challenges, helping them live with hope and direction.
- Salt of the Earth – Students were reminded of their power to strengthen, preserve, and bring out the best in others through purposeful living.
- We are all born for Community and Relationship – Emphasis was placed on building positive relationships and being responsible members of a just and compassionate school community.
- Mercy in Action – Students reflected on our key Mercy values of compassion, courage, hospitality, and faith in action and how we can better bring these to life in our college.
To continue celebrating our Mercy tradition, we are excited to launch the CMCC Mercy Art Competition. Students are invited to creatively depict Catherine McAuley living her faith in action, incorporating one of the Mercy values. Artworks must include the Mercy Cross, the yellow Catherine McAuley rose, and be submitted on A3 paper by Friday 30 May (Week 5). Winners will receive canteen vouchers, and their work will be proudly displayed throughout the school.
We look forward to a term filled with creativity, growth, and meaningful contributions to our school community.

Hello families,
As we commence Term 2, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the strong and positive start many of our students have made. It is clear that our Wati students are continuing to grow in confidence, leadership, and care for one another—and this term, our focus is to build on this strong foundation by guiding our Wati House through two key developmental themes.
This term, Year 7 will focus on Respectful Relationships, learning how their words and actions can build a supportive, faith-filled community. This will be reinforced at Year 7 Camp, where students will develop friendships, resilience, and teamwork. Year 8 will explore Making Good Choices & Improving Self-Esteem, with a focus on Compassion, encouraging thoughtful decisions that build confidence and care for others. Across both year levels, we are also strengthening our focus on academic rigour, respectful communication, and positive peer connections; skills that are essential now and into the future.
With this, it is a privilege to promote and highlight those who lived out the Mercy tradition in Term 1 2025 and were awarded the Mercy Value Award:

I would also like to take this opportunity to shine a spotlight on one of our Year 7 students, Eamon Brown, who demonstrated tremendous courage and leadership by performing Amazing Grace on the bagpipes during our College ANZAC Day Ceremony. His willingness to share his talent in such a meaningful and public way was a powerful act of respect and remembrance. We are all so proud of Eamon and what a beautiful example of the strength that lies in showing immense courage!
A heartfelt thank you also goes out to the Wati students who represented our House at the Medowie Dawn Service during the school holidays. Your presence and reverence at this solemn community event were deeply appreciated and did not go unnoticed. I look forward to working without Wati House students to continue to live out our Mercy values, make thoughtful choices, and look out for one another. With compassion, courage and commitment, Wati House will continue to thrive.

Welcome Back
In conversations with students throughout the first week it has been pleasing to hear that many families took the opportunity to recharge over the Easter break, connect with friends and families and it feels like students are facing the new term with a renewed sense of optimism.
Learning Advisor (LEA)
This is an opportune time to share with the community our LEA focus for the term:
Year 9 |
Being an Upstander – Protecting What Is Important A range of wellbeing and learning experiences designed to support Year 9 students in being an advocate for themselves, others, the environment and potentially, an issue, in an appropriate and respectful manner. |
Year 10 |
Future Focussed A broad range of opportunities designed for Year 10 students to focus on their futures not only in Year 10 but also with pathway, and course, selection and career aspirations. |
As always, I encourage parents and caregivers to engage in conversation with their child regarding each of their subjects, including LEA, as well as their broader experience at CMCC and if there is anything ever of concern, to connect with the relevant teacher, Leader of Learning, Leader of Wellbeing and Engagement or myself, as Head of House.
Year 9 Highlight from Ms Joyce
This week in our year meetings, we prepared for upcoming assessments, discussed the transition to winter uniform after Mother’s Day, and reflected on our rights and responsibilities at school. We focused on the importance of feeling safe, being accepted, and taking responsibility for our actions—especially in avoiding disruption and bullying. We also explored ways to support our wellbeing through activities like music, art, PE, sleep, healthy eating, and connecting with others.
A special highlight was community singing with Mrs Mavros, reminding us that singing together is about courage, connection, and joy—not just talent. It reflected our commitment to a Mercy-inspired community where confident, agile, and reflective learners thrive in an environment of faith, purpose, fulfilment, and joy. Thank you to Mrs Mavros, who will continue to lead Year 9 in this uplifting initiative throughout the term.
Year 10 Highlight from Mr Bain
This term, Year 10 is focusing on ‘Pride’—in ourselves, our work, each other, and our school. Pride builds ownership, shifting students from “I have to do this” to “I want to do this well,” which fosters motivation and growth. It also strengthens character, helping students act with resilience, self-respect, and integrity. Most importantly, pride fosters a sense of community—encouraging students to support others, respect shared spaces, and create a positive environment. Throughout Term 2, we will continue to explore and reinforce this theme in LEA classes and year meetings, helping students grow in confidence, maturity, and connection.

Hello families,
We are pleased to share that the HSC exam timetable has now been officially released. While the HSC exams are still two terms away, this is an important time for our Year 12 students to begin planning and preparing. All Year 12 students have been provided with a printed copy of the timetable, and additional copies are available in the Senior Space for anyone needing one. The timetable has also been emailed directly to students, ensuring they have easy access to this important information as they set up a clear and realistic study plan for the months ahead. We encourage students to begin thinking proactively about their preparation, and we remind families that our staff are always here to offer guidance, support, and resources along the way.
In addition to this academic update, we are delighted to reflect on a wonderful experience recently enjoyed by our Year 11 students — their Reflection Day at Soldiers Point Hall. This was a truly meaningful and uplifting day, providing students with the chance to step away from the busyness of their studies and spend time reflecting on their personal growth, relationships, and the road ahead.
A heartfelt thank you goes to our Ministry Coordinator, Mrs Siobhan Kelly, whose hard work and thoughtful preparation ensured the day was such a memorable and enriching experience. The theme of the day, “seeing the light” — recognising the positive in others and within themselves — offered students a valuable opportunity to pause, reflect, and celebrate the strengths and gifts that they each bring to their friendships, families, and the College community. It was inspiring to see students engaging so openly, encouraging one another, and embracing the opportunity for personal reflection.
As we look ahead to the rest of the term, we encourage our students to continue carrying this sense of optimism and encouragement into their daily lives, supporting one another and recognising the light that exists in every member of our community.
Please join us in keeping both our Year 11 and Year 12 students in our prayers as they continue on their senior school journey — may they approach the weeks ahead with confidence, resilience, and a deep sense of hope.

Welcome to Term 2!
We hope all families had a restful and refreshing break. Term 1 was filled with exciting challenges, strong progress, and some fantastic achievements across all year levels. Term 2 is already shaping up to be a very important part of the school year, with formal assessments, new content, and opportunities for students to develop consistent study habits that support long-term success. We’re excited to continue this journey with our students and families.
Celebrating Success from Term 1
We’re incredibly proud of the hard work and progress our students have made so far this year. Each year group has been engaging with challenging concepts, applying them in new ways, and developing valuable problem-solving skills.
Year 7 completed their very first high school mathematics term, focusing on Fractions and Decimals. They learned how to apply these concepts in everyday situations like cooking, shopping, and dividing quantities fairly. Their enthusiasm and willingness to learn has set a strong foundation for future success. |
Year 8 worked through Rates, Ratios, and Equations. Students explored real-life applications such as speed, time and distance, unit pricing, and simple algebraic problem solving. They’ve demonstrated increased confidence and are building strong mathematical habits. |
Year 9 CORE and ADV explored Financial Maths and Data. This included creating budgets, understanding how tax works, and calculating interest—important skills for becoming financially responsible and independent. Meanwhile, our Year 9 Maths in Trade students got hands-on experience through practical experiments involving cement mixing and ratio calculations, applying mathematical skills to construction-style tasks. |
Year 10 CORE continued developing algebraic skills and solving linear equations, laying the groundwork for future mathematical study. Year 10 ADV began their journey into Functions—a key Stage 6 concept that helps students visualise and model relationships between variables. Year 10 Maths in Trade focused on understanding how to run a successful business, including managing profit, costs, and productivity using real-world maths applications. |
Year 11 tackled their first term of Stage 6 Mathematics. They’ve adapted to the faster pace and greater complexity of senior maths with persistence and maturity, setting themselves up well for the rest of the year. |
Year 12 has now passed the halfway mark in their final year of school. With content wrapping up by the end of Term 2, students are shifting their focus to revision, consolidation, and preparing for their HSC exams. It’s an exciting milestone, and we are incredibly proud of their effort and commitment so far. |
Study Routines
Term 2 is a busy time with formal assessments for all year levels. To do their best, students should develop good study habits now.
We encourage students to:
- Review classwork regularly to stay on top of the material.
- Practice daily, even if it's just for 15-20 minutes.
- Ask for help early if they’re unsure about something.
- Use class notes and feedback to focus on areas they need to improve.
Parents can support by:
- Providing a quiet study space at home.
- Helping to create a study schedule and checking in on progress.
- Encouraging communication with teachers if help is needed.
By working together, we can ensure that every student feels supported, prepared, and confident as they move through a busy but rewarding term. Let’s continue to build strong habits and finish Semester 1 on a high note!
A Message from the Leader of Learning PDHPE
Lachlan Tonks
Welcome back to Term 2 at CMCC! It's always a pleasure to see our students return, refreshed and ready to hit the ground running with all things PDHPE related. This term promises to be filled with exciting activities and learning opportunities, and I'm thrilled to share some highlights with you.
Blazing Belles
Each Tuesday in Break 1, our Blazing Belles group continues to grow! This initiative encourages female students to get active in a fun and supportive environment. From volleyball to Just Dance, basketball to free play — it’s all about what the students feel like on the day. Thanks to the PDHPE faculty for offering such a dynamic and inclusive space for physical activity.

Water polo
Our Year 10 Physical Activity and Sport Studies (PASS) students dived into the world of water polo! With a focus on teamwork, tactical thinking, and aquatic fitness, this unit has made a real splash. Students are enjoyed the challenge and developing key skills in a new and exciting environment.

Ga Ga Ball
Even with wet weather limiting outdoor access, the PDHPE faculty has remained flexible and creative. From all sporting contexts and dance in the hall, to modified lessons in classrooms like Ga Ga ball, we’ve made every minute count. Students have continued to develop skills, stay active, and have fun, no matter the setting.

Athletics
For our Year 7-9 PDHPE classes, athletics is the practical unit of focus this term. We're emphasising key teaching points, providing feedback to both teachers and students, and honing skill execution in various athletic events in preparation for the College carnival later this term. A special mention goes out to our Year 7 cohort for embracing the 'Silent Protocol' strategy, which has proven to be a resounding success in enhancing performance and feedback mechanisms.

All junior PDHPE classes put their best foot forward in the two-week build up to the school’s Cross Country Carnival. The participation was impressive across the board. Today, selected students from the carnival represented our school at the next level — be sure to check out next week’s sports article for the full wrap-up of their results!
Uniform Changes
As we transition into the winter uniform next weel, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish all the mothers and mother-like figures in our CMCC and wider community a very happy Mother's Day. Your support and dedication are truly appreciated. Whilst this holds a change in uniform, please remember that while hats are no longer mandatory during practical lessons, sun safety remains paramount. I encourage all students to stay sun-safe and engaged in their activities throughout the term.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss how you can further support your child's learning in PDHPE via your child’s classroom teacher, or at lachlan.tonks@mn.catholic.edu.au.
Wishing everyone a productive and enjoyable Term 2 ahead!
Warm regards,
Lachlan Tonks

CARLEY CORNELISSEN MURAL
In Week 10, Term 1, we were fortunate to have Brisbane based composer, Carley Cornelissen, come to the college to create a mural in our new art spaces in the Trocarie Wing. Throughout the week, learners were fortunate to see Carley’s art making process and she created her design that incorporated local flora and fauna. Thank you so much to Mrs Aleeah Maffesoni for her vision for this space, and to Carley for sharing her talents with us.
