The English Faculty is looking forward to another productive and engaging term with our students in Term 2.

In Years 7-10, students will be studying the following units:

Year 7

Lights, Camera, Action – an introduction to film analysis and the fantasy genre, including a close study of the film, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

Formal assessment task: Analytical essay

Year 8

Standing Up & Speaking Out – students will develop their persuasive writing skills and undertake a close study of the documentary, Blackfish, as an example of a persuasive text which has made a great impact.

Informal assessment task: Persuasive speech

Year 9

Exploring Dystopian Worlds – a close study of the dystopian genre and a teacher-selected novel, looking at how this genre can offer warnings for our contemporary world.

Informal assessment task: Discursive speech

Year 10

Echoes through time – An exploration of a classic novel and a contemporary film through which students will explore how similar issues and experiences can be represented in texts of different eras.

Formal assessment task: Half-yearly examination

Parents will have a received a “Welcome to Term 2” email from your child’s teacher with class-specific information, but a couple of general reminders:

  • Students are expected to engage in 20-30 minutes of reading, four nights a week. This could be the class prescribed novel, or a text of their own choosing.
  • Students will receive three homework tasks across the term to complete for English; these are all available on your child’s class MS Teams page.
  • Parents can assist students with their skills in English by reading with them, reviewing or summarising classwork and helping to proof or edit any writing pieces they complete.

In Years 11 & 12, classes will continue with their NESA-mandated modules this term. Students in the Standard, Advanced & Extension courses have been provided with a homework schedule and their formal assessment notifications for the term ahead.

Please feel free to contact your child’s class teacher if you have any questions about English this term.
